Z65

"Have you heard about the Z65 design by Chris Ostlind? The design includes the most "wanted" features I keep hearing about.

When I spoke to Chris about the Z65 he told me that he wanted to create a small tri for “a guy who has a beach cat sitting in the garage. The beach cat has been there for the past few years, and he’s no longer using it because now he’s got a small family.”

A sailor used to a high performance beach cat may have a hard time converting to a monohull. But this trimaran may be a great solution.

The Z65 is reminiscent of the early Tremolino trimaran design that incorporated a Hobie beach cat rig and hulls for outriggers. A new center hull is constructed and matched up to the existing beach cat hulls, then connected to form a trimaran.

Not only does this cut down on building time, but it also saves money when it comes to overall costs. Chris estimated that the main center hull for a Z65 might be able to be constructed for about $6,000. So the whole approach is very economical if you’re on a really tight budget for building.

Chris said he thinks the hulls from beach cats such as Hobie 20, Prindle 19-6, Mystere 6.0, Nacra 5.8 or Nacra 6.0 would work well on the Z65. So there are plenty of options.

The Z65 even features a small cabin, which is another asset for a small family. There would even be space for a Coleman 2-burner stove and Porta-Potty. Chris even designed a simplified folding system with the Z65 that makes it quick to set up for sailing after taking off a trailer.

All in all, this design seems to offer a lot of benefits compared to its economical costs. Please keep it in mind for sailor-friends who might be interested. Joe Farinaccio - the "Small Tri Guy"
